DBT
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment for those who experience emotions very intensely. This method combines Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), unique coping strategies, mindfulness meditation and interpersonal skills training to improve our emotion regulation, negative thinking patterns, disruptive or harmful behaviours and challenging relationships.
The word “dialectical” means combining opposing ideas. DBT focuses on helping people accept the reality of their lives and helping them learn to change their lives, including unhelpful behaviours. Extensive research on this mode of therapy has shown reduced suffering and a greater ability to appreciate life – goals we can all aspire to. Some of the specific benefits found include:
- Enhanced motivation and a desire to live fully/create a “life worth living”
- Improved quality of life, including for those with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)
- Improved emotion regulation and stability
- Enhanced interpersonal relations and communication skills
- Diminished self-destructive behaviours, including self-harm
- Enhanced ability to manage crises
- Decreased suicidality and hospitalizations
Our trained and certified DBT therapists offer individual and group treatment for adults, teens and children/parents (DBT-C). In each and every case, our goal is to help you create the best life possible – and it truly is possible!
